Pedal Power
Pedal Power 1

Produced during an artist-in-residence program at Zeela Art Gallery, located in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. 🇿🇲
The work was inspired by a social issue encountered firsthand in Zambia: chronic power outages.
The creative process began with residing in the country and visiting local markets repeatedly to acquire a bicycle, parts, and tools one by one. The artist assembled the bicycle by hand, creating a machine that generates electricity and powers an LED light through the rotation of its rear wheel.
Through this physical process, the work attempted to re-examine our relationship with electricity—encouraging a view of electricity not as an infrastructure to be passively consumed, but as something generated through physical movement, and inviting imagination about the environmental impact and the hidden systems behind our power supply.
For an artist who had worked primarily in media art using electricity as a medium, this process also became a significant opportunity to critically re-examine and re-evaluate the very essence of the practice.
